Today we celebrate the birthday of Kylie Minogue, born on May 28th, 1968, who launched her musical career in the 80's with the hit single The Loco-Motion. The Gerry Goffin and Carole King penned dance number had already proven it's popularity twice before. In 1962 original recording artist Little Eva topped the charts with the song, buoyed by a dance routine she came up with to accompany the lyrics. In a surprising move, hard rockers Grand Funk Railroad covered the song in 1974 and also took it to number one. At the time it was only the second single to achieve the feat of reaching number one by separate artists on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
   Kylie originally recorded and released a version of the song in 1987 as Locomotion in her native Australia. It topped the charts and was the best selling single of the year there. A new version of the song  was recorded for her 1988 debut album, Kylie, and it is this version that most American audiences are familiar with. It peaked at number three in the States for her and earned the song the honor of having charted in the top 10 in three subsequent decades. So happy 46th Kylie!
